ARDA is a trade association representing the vacation ownership and resort development industries that was established in 1969 and located in Washington DC. Today, ARDA has over 1,000 corporate members that include the larger, public companies and the smaller, private companies. The organization membership also includes timeshare owner associations (HOAs), resort management companies, industry vendors, suppliers and owners through the ARDA Resort Owners Coalition (ARDA-ROC).
ARDA's mission is as follows:
"It is the mission of the American Resort Development Association to foster and promote the growth of the industry and to serve its members through legislative and regulatory advocacy; public relations and communications; education; membership development; and ethics enforcement."
ARDA performs a number of important functions. One of them is to issue advisories to alert its members and non-members about unethical and illegal practices designed to take advantage of owners of timeshare interests that appear from time to time. These alerts are similar to "Virus" alerts in the software world.
Greg brought to our attention a contact he received from Mecca Management Consultants. The Better Business Bureau in Omaha, Nebraska indicated it did not know anything about this company, even though its website provides a local address and implies it has been in business for a number of years.
We know nothing about this company. However, ARDA has issued recent advisories that we should all be aware of. You can read the two most recent and relevant ones by clicking here.
We are not members of ARDA. Perhaps we should be. There are other similar organizations that are International in scope, which we will follow as well.
In the meantime, it is always a good idea to look at the Better Business Bureau for information about companies that may contact you about your interests in any timeshare you may own.
Remember one thing. We own contracts issued by a Mexican Corporation in Mexico.
Companies located in Mexico do not have the independent and external oversight companies in the US, Canada and Europe have. Consequently, we all may be exposed to schemes, scams and illegal offers.
